Our Mission Statement and Values

We aim to ensure that all children at Bedmond Academy reach their full potential through experiencing:

We aim to work together to:

  • Become an excellent school with consistently high standards in all areas
  • Create a safe and inclusive environment that will enrich and add value to all children academically, emotionally and socially during their time at our school
  • Recognise the individual learning needs of all pupils, enabling them to maximise their potential and successfully take the early steps towards economic well-being
  • Work in partnership with the mums, dads and carers of our pupils and members of the community helping them to support our children and create an environment where they can have a positive effect on the life of the school
  • Actively listen to the pupils, to give them a meaningful voice and encourage their participation in developing the school
  • Use the latest technology to enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum

Promoting and Teaching British Values

The DfE have recently reinforced the need“to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. At Bedmond these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy: 
Our school is inherently democratic. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard and their opinions acted on through our School Council. Aside from providing daily feedback on their learning, pupils are also given the opportunity to help enhance their learning experience through pupil questionnaires, conducted termly. Democracy is also furthered through our inclusive nature, both in terms of rewards (many of these voted for by children in class) and sanctions (outlined in our Behaviour and Achievement policy). Our home-school agreement, created in consultation with children, staff, parents and governors, also reflects a whole-school ‘team’ commitment to ensuring fairness and inclusivity for all.

The Rule of Law: 
The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days through our Rights and Responsibilities. Each class has a charter that has been created following reflecting on ‘wants and needs’ in relation to the Unicef Rights of the Child Convention. They are referred to throughout the school day to reinforce high expectations of behaviour, including ways to work together to ensure success. Assemblies, visits from authorities, Councillors, MPs and our visitors from the church further aid pupils’ understanding of the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty: 
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make positive choices safely, through our provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and we advise them of how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety, PSHE lessons and of course our Rights and Responsibilities. Whether it be through choice of challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices. This is further underlined by our ‘Active Learner’ skills – key aspects of learning aptitudes that are emphasised daily throughout the school. These help encourage children to reflect and feel confident to make such choices.

Mutual Respect
Part of our school ethos and Behaviour and Achievement policy has revolved around Core Values such as ‘Respect’, and pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown. This is further demonstrated through our Rights and Responsibilities, the values of which runs through the school day and forms a core part of helping children work and learn together successfully. Its role in rewards and sanctions is also reiterated in our Behaviour and Achievement policy. Our work with the Bedmond Task Force and local church also means that we encourage our pupils to show respect to others through mixing with members of our village community.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs: 
This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. In order to help children understand more about a range of faiths, our teachers follow the Hertfordshire RE scheme of work. Furthermore, we plan a range of visitors to school to inform, and celebrate, a range of cultures and hold themed assemblies with a focus on prejudice and prejudice-based bullying; this is also supported by our teaching and learning in PSHE. Our school council will also identify ways in which all children can learn, understand and celebrate our backgrounds, belief and heritage.
